Ep. 116: The Five Capitals Of Family Wealth with Keith Whitaker

Money can fund a great life, but it cannot tell your family what a great life is. That’s why I sat down with Keith Whitaker, president and founding managing director of Wise Counsel Research, to talk about the qualitative side of wealth: the human factors that determine whether financial success becomes a blessing or a burden for the rising generation.

We unpack Keith’s research with rare multigenerational families who successfully pass major wealth or operating businesses beyond the third generation, then translate the findings into a practical framework you can use right away. You’ll hear the five forms of non-financial capital that matter as much as any balance sheet: human capital (health and resilience), legacy capital (values in action), family relationship capital (communication and trust), structural capital (trust and financial competence), and social capital (purpose beyond the family). If you care about family governance, family office outcomes, or sustainable multigenerational wealth, this framework gives you a clearer map.

Then we get concrete about trusts and inheritance. We talk about why wealth creates anxiety and how silence sends the wrong message, how the trustee relationship can either build confidence or breed dependency, and why a family constitution can guide decisions with real moral force even when the legal documents are complex. We also pivot to a bigger question: if wealth creates freedom, what do we do with that freedom? Keith makes the case for liberal education and the great books as tools for living well, especially in a future where technology may change the meaning of work.

Subscribe for more conversations that make money simpler and life fuller, then share this with a parent, founder, or heir and leave a review with your biggest takeaway.
